Preserving Mid-Century Modern Heritage: 3D Scanning the Palo Alto First Christian Church
As-Built World recently completed a comprehensive 3D laser scanning project for the Palo Alto First Christian Church. This historic mid-century modern church, with its distinctive A-frame sanctuary featuring a prominent cross and welcoming entry facade, is preparing for a thoughtful renovation to better serve its congregation and community.
Our team was brought on board to capture precise existing conditions using high-accuracy 3D scanning technology (including Matterport for immersive digital twins and laser scanning for detailed point clouds). The primary goal was to provide the architect and design team with reliable data to support planning while preserving key architectural elements.
Project Focus and Scope
The main emphasis was on preserving the entry facade’s intricate details—including the soaring triangular roofline, vertical glass elements, structural columns, and welcoming entrance features. These aspects define the building’s character, and accurate documentation ensured that any updates respect the original design intent.
In addition to the entry and sanctuary, we scanned:
- The main sanctuary space
- Various offices and support areas
- The adjacent kitchen and dining hall
- The entire parking lot and surrounding site areas for potential future reconfiguration
This holistic capture provided a complete digital record of the facility, from interior worship and administrative spaces to exterior grounds.
Deliverables
We delivered:
- High-resolution point clouds for detailed analysis
- An integrated Revit model to enable seamless design iteration, visualization, clash detection, and coordination
- Immersive 3D digital twins for virtual walkthroughs, stakeholder reviews, and collaborative planning
These assets eliminate guesswork, reduce the need for multiple site visits, minimize errors during
design, and support faster, more informed decision-making throughout the renovation process.
